I want them to know that all of their favorite songs by their favorite artists can be played by implementing the correct techniques and fundamentals. I try to instill the importance of scales and progressions, and how that connects into learning their favorite songs or even writing their own original material. It's my goal to engage students through music they already love, and (at the same time) introduce them to new music ideas and musical concepts/challenges. A very important aspect to my enjoyment of all of these pursuits is the degree to which they actually connect and overlap with many other topics and disciplines- science, mathematics, visual art, language and sociology all intersect with music at one point or another. This way, the student will understand how to produce a big sound without straining. Breathing exercises such as 'underwater noises' and 'tornado siren' are fun and keep the mood open and lively.
