Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. I create custom lessons for each student in my studio. Its important to me that students feel they are progressions towards their goals and I prioritize that in my lesson planning. I typically give students 2 or 3 songs to practice at a time, and I always include a classical or folk art song, and a musical theater song. It's important to me that students enjoy what they are singing--if they don't, they won't be motivated, are less likely to practice, and they won't progress as quickly. Still, I believe students should sing a variety of literature (and may even find something they didn't know they enjoyed), and regularly start beginning students with some simple Italian art songs.
