I am an instructor who recognizes music as a powerful symbol of humanity and the dramatic emotional effects it has on people. I thoroughly enjoy sharing these experiences with my students, helping them to grow and become more acquainted with all that music has to offer. I graduated from Concordia University with a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education in May of 2013. I've spent time in the elementary music classroom as well as the middle and high school music classrooms. I have teaching experience in the areas of voice, choir, percussion, show choir, guitar, piano, music history, and musical theatre history. I am a believer of structure AND fun. I typically start students with basic technical work, combined with creative games to keep the skills relevant and interesting. Then I introduce more complicated process and ideas into the mix, while allowing the students to find out their own voices. I can't prescribe one way of teaching to differnet people, therefore I won't until I get to meet that student! :) An avid lover of dance and yoga, I incorporate lots of movement games, body work, and breathing exercises in my lessons. My teaching style heavily emphasizes repetition; I prefer students to work repeatedly on musical phrases and voice concepts to create consistency and make once difficult feats easy. This assures that the student is able to use lessons learned in future situations, and helps them to realize their ability to accomplish goals and challenge themselves toward maximal progress. I am a vocalist and instructor originally from Portland, Oregon. I have enjoyed performing since I was very young, and have over 15 years of vocal training. I can usually be heard singing opera and classical repertoire, but I also sing musical theater, pop, jazz, country, and contemporary styles. Throughout my time as an artist I have had the opportunity to record an album with my family of singers, tour Eastern Europe with my University choir, and work with new music composers and vocal electronics at CalArts. I have taught in one-on-one lessons, large group rehearsals, and everywhere in between. I started my teaching with a group of peers and professors while studying my undergraduate Music Education degree. We worked as a group to teach children ages six through 16 how to play violin/cello and perform as group.
