I like to start by exploring where the student is at in their musical education and what they are looking to study in private lessons. From there, we build the lesson around them! Once we’ve established where to begin, I’ll ask the student to choose a piece they’d like to perform and I’ll assign them a piece of my own choice as well. For my classical students I'll typically start with art song repertoire and for musical theatre I'll choose a classic piece. Read More

For beginning students who are children I use varying method books such as Faber, Bastian, Leonard etc. These method books do a wonderful job of progressing the student naturally and gradually which is my style of teaching. Once the student shows understanding and mastery of the basic fundamentals taught in these books, the level of advancement grows and solo pieces will be chosen that best help the Student progress musically and technically. Each student is different, and therefore requires their own personal curriculum. The first questions from teacher to students should always be, "What is it that makes you want to play", "What kind of music interests you the most", and "What do you hope to accomplish musically". Some people only want to learn a little, others want to go all the way. By asking these questions, one can understand what drives the student to play, and establish a personalized fun and effective curriculum. Read More
