I believe lessons should be fun and engaging. I believe the most improvement in a student comes from practice time, so my goal as a teacher is to show the student how to practice most effectively by applying what they learned in their lessons in their practice sessions. If it is all right with them, we can record the lesson so they can go back and watch. As a teacher, I believe it is important to be positive and supporting, giving constructive criticism guide the student to play better while also boosting the student's confidence. Read More

For beginning guitar I start out with Chris Parkening: classical guitar book...learning finguring styles, rudiments, and notes. We then go into various techniques and develop song repetoire and chording and strumming styles. For beginning piano I start with level one Hal Leonard book for beg. piano and various beginning classical composers: Beethoven, Mozart, Tchakovisky, Jazz, etc. . I split this class into musicianship-learning notes and reading music, fingering and scales, and theory. Read More

Together with my students, we discover a wide range of repertoire, from Mozart, Bach, Schumann, and Prokofiev to classics of Blues, Jazz, Reggae, Pop, Rock and other genres. I also equip students with the practical skills of sight reading, accompaniment styles, transposition and improvisation so they can take their creativity and love of music in many directions. But my goal is to do more than teach piano. I help students become problem solvers and independent learners, as they find their own artistic voices. Read More

My teaching experience dates all the way back to early high school, when I taught piano lessons to kids in my local neighborhood. In college, I continued teaching as a part time job while at home during the summers, and when I returned home from touring, I taught at several studios in the Sacramento area, teaching private voice and piano, and classes I designed curriculum for, such as Musical Theatre for Beginners, "We Sing Disney", and Singing for Ages 8-12. When I teach my students, I allow them to choose songs (even original ones they've written) they are interested in singing. I know when I'm assigned a song I'm not fond of, I'm less likely to take the time to practice it during the week! During our lessons, I take the time to warm up their voices and bodies thoroughly before we start singing any repertoire. Singing is a full body experience, and I teach my students to experience that as soon as they work with me! Read More

For children, I begin with Donald Waxman's Pageant for Piano series. The pieces are quite fun, and also good for technique. The illustrations also offer many opportunities for story-making and engagement. For adults, I begin with James Bastien's The Older Beginner Piano course, and for intermediate learners, supplement it with pieces from Bartok's Mikrokosmos, Czerny, Kabalevsky, Burgmuller's 24 Etudes, duets and various other literature as appropriate. Improvisational skills may also be taught. Read More
