For beginning students, around ages 5-9, I start with easy songs, but also teach them how singing works. I like to teach technique, and help students improve in their singing. Once students have grasped the fundamentals of singing, I'll let them start looking at solo repertoire so they can practice for a recital performance. Before the first lesson I always like to inquire with the student (Parent/Guardian) if the student has taken lessons in the past, in order to better teach, and assign practice material. However, if a student has never taken lessons before, I recommend to young students the Alfred's Basic Piano Lessons Book 1, and for my adult students I will send supplemental materials via email, but also encourage that they purchase in the future, "Essential Piano Repertoire" Level two by Keith Snell.
