For all students, I begin with classical fundamentals such as body alignment, breath support, and resonance and moving to topics including diction, vocal health, interpretation, and stage presence. I will work with the student to find repertoire that will best fit their voice, help achieve their musical goals, and be aligned with what they enjoy musically. When beginning teaching I typically assess the learners general attention span, natural strengths, and what is motivating for them. I complete a beginner piano assessment to find out how the learner is with pattern recognition, any previous knowledge they may have, and what type of instruction they respond best to. When I understand the learners least restrictive environment I will choose the type of notation we start with. I studied with a professor for 6 years who was an expert in Dalcroze Eurhythmics which focuses on singing with gestures and dancing out rhythms and melody lines.I love solfege and incorporate it everychance I get when learning a piece. I normally start out with the Faber and Faber Piano Adventures methods books for the piano students. This includes a lesson book and a theory book. The lesson book will teach the student the physical skill of playing piano by presenting them with leveled songs to learn. The theory book will focus more on the mechanics of music and playing and require some written work. These two methods work very well together to give the student a comprehensive experience with the piano. Read More
