If a student isn't having fun learning the instrument then I am doing something wrong! Learning should be fun and a joy not a chore. I try to encourage the students to practice without being told to do so. With that comes a joy of doing it on your own and for themselves not for anyone else. I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. I use multiple materials in trianing the students and I also respect the sacrifice of the parents in getting them lessons, so much uf the material is made by me with specific focus on that student. I do use some of the Hal Leonard's Essential Elements Series material cause it is consistent and user friendly.
