I encourage parents to teach their children music from young age. Most of my students are kids from age 5-13, level starting from novice to intermediate. I have been practicing tutoring piano for 5 years and voice for 3 years. My teaching style not only includes standard piano playing skills, but also sheet music reading, musical hearing, and proper playing techniques. As natural as a singing voice can be it still takes effort and hard work to maintain your sound or keep yourself relevant. I self taught myself a lot. Through this self teaching I was able to help others go through the same process a little easier. I spent hours if not shut ins (days of just soaking and singing) editing and correcting my tone. Developing and finding your voice (confidence in yourself), knowing your sound/ style, and finally finding your rhythm to where even if there is no beat you can become one and be the beat is the basics before any singer can bloom. I tailor warm ups to the student's repertoire and change it up frequently so the student doesn't get bored or go on autopilot. For all vocalists, regardless of age, we work on breathing properly and posture, then moving on to tone and stylistic choices. During the first lesson, I ask the students about their musical goals and if there are particular techniques they feel they want or need to master. I ask the student to keep a record of this, as having a mission or musical goals is vital in keeping engaged with practice.
