I base my teaching methods on the student I am teaching. For students that are children at a beginner level, I typically begin with the essential elements of creating vocal foundation which I draw from many sources. Once we have set a good foundation, we tend to begin working on repertoire that is appropriate for the level at which they are singing, using those songs as learning opportunities. Some students love classical music, and we work on Italian arias...while others love 80s Metal Bands, and we work on healthy ways to approach contemporary music. For three summers in a row, I attended a summer program for opera in New Mexico. At LEOI, I got to work with coaches and instructors of excellent caliber and reputation in the opera world. I have also sung at Carnegie Hall with the University of Tulsa Capella Chamber Singers in which I was the soprano section leader for the year. For children, I focus on the comprehension of pitch and note reading. If the child has a song that he or she wants to sing, then we will pursue it if it is vocally fitting. If not, I have a variety we can choose from. We also will pursue the fundamentals of music theory in our lessons as well.
