I love to see students learn something and progress as the make music. Therefore, it is my goal that my student progresses at their own pace. I encourage the students to set goals for themselves and help them achieve them. Commendation is given as the student progresses and this encourages the student to dive deeper into his playing. Also, I try to see what the student is interested in, where her it be rock, alternative, blues, classical, or even jazz. Read More

My experience is mostly with beginning students, so I take an easy-going approach. We will begin with fundamentals, either working out of one of my books, one of the student's, or with a different modality depending on the student's learning style. I will facilitate a fun, exciting environment in which the student can choose their path. Possible goals could be: learning your favorite song, memorizing scales, learning to read music, learning to solo, and anything else that pops into the student's head! Read More

Music is such a fantastic tool for keeping children productive in a creative way. By simultaneously working on technique and theory, my students learn how to support an ensemble with their own creative input. I also help students understand their limitations not as faults or failings, but as guidelines for the creative process. Composition/Songwriting is a major element of this course. Read More

Each student learns at their own pace and it's important to understand that not everybody learns the same. Setting both short and long term goals with the student helps me understand what they want out of lessons. This makes it easier for me to engage with them and bring it back to something relevant to them at the end of the day. For example, no child understands advanced rhythm unless you disguise it in familiar terms e.g. using the phrase "run po-ny run" to describe two eighth notes sandwiched in between to quarter notes. I've been teaching music for a little over 5 years (2014). I have started many kids who don't know if they would rather learn guitar, drums, or piano. So I give them a tour of all three and show them the basics before they decide their favorite. I encourage consistent practice and practice methods that ensure that the students always feel a sense of improvement without frustration. Personally I've felt the sense of improvement after practicing but was still more agitated, but that was college, before I started teaching. Read More

I like to "cross-train" my students. By this, I mean that it is important to work all of our musical muscles in order to become well-rounded musicians. Lessons could include anything from ear training, solfege, sight reading, song learning, and much more. Through this exploration, I can find what excites the student and work that into the lesson, and the student can find what inspires them while exploring it more and working on it with me. Read More

I have been sharing my knolwedge of music with others for as long as I can remember. It all ways feels good to know that you passed a bit of knowledge on to another human being. I began teaching private lessons part time about 4 years ago. In 2015 I began teaching at Larkin Street Youth Services, a drop in center for homeless youth in San Francisco. There we try not only to develop great musicians, but responsible hard working young people able to function and thrive in modern society. Read More
