If the new student is a younger child, I begin them with Hal Leonard's Guitar Method Book One. If I am teaching beginners I will focus on developing proper technique (i.e. hand placement and crossing strings). How one ends is contigent on how they start, so I make sure beginners have proper technique before moving on to repertoire. I will also have beginners go through the Hal Leonard method books to ensure they have the theory necessary to progress. This book has been the standard for decades and continues to help players find the foundation for their playing. As the student progresses we will start to add appropriate pieces for them to learn and perform. Electric players and Upright players can start choosing songs or pieces they want to learn.
