Eventually we will move up to learning songs. As the student becomes more advanced, we will learn beats that are more challenging in a variety of styles, and gain independence and fluidity around the drums. We will learn rudiments and more finely tune their technique and learn songs that are more and more complex. For students at higher levels we can get into jazz drumming and rudimental percussion. For beginning students, I start with the Douglas Steensland Flute Student books. For intermediate and advanced students, I focus on memorization of scales in addition to working out of Taffanel and Gaubert's 17 Daily Exercises, etude books (i.e., Melodious and Progressive series), and standard flute repertoire. My goal as a teacher is to help the students improve their overall musicianship, while also addressing each students personal goals.
