The most important part of singing is making sure no harm is ever being done - so healthy technique is the key, then, we start to focus on depth of sound, etc. I try to help my students find a way to make singing as natural and simple as possible, without overthinking and becoming obsessive about rhythms or pitches. Of course everything should be accurate, but the more the vowels are forward (like in speech), the jaw and tongue can move freely and independently (just like when we yell), and the breath is constant, then everything will be in tune. Method books and etudes are great, but it's important for students of all ages to have a frame of reference for what they want to achieve. Once we both know what a student wants to achieve, I'll gather a series of repertoire for them. I have extensive practical experience in helping young students develop their foundational piano skills, music styles as well as creative endeavors, which have been a primary focus of my pedagogic activities. However, I pair technical work with listening assignments, so that the students actually see the point of fundamental training. Hanon is the one book that has stayed with me for two decades and I adhere to its various training regimens very closely. The book itself may be insufficient, but the auxiliary exercises I designed will improve the practice efficiency. Read More
