When beginner students start lessons with me I generally use a Lesson Book and eventually a Technique Book and soon after some kind of Theory Book to learn behind the music. For the lesson book for beginners I like to use the Alfred's Series, which has all kind of levels of beginning piano whether you are 4 years oldup toadult. For the technique book I like to use a Hanon series, which I start first with exercises by rote and patterns until the student can read music and understand the exercises in the book. Read More

Everybody learns differently, and everybody has different skill-sets and levels. I also believe most people have different styles. For beginners just picking up a guitar (or bass), I'm more apt to have them refer to some curriculum outside of the lesson session, as opposed to more advanced students, where the discernment on what to use as reference varies with each individual. I'm definitely a fan of hands on learning (obviously with a musical instrument), but with this type of learning the practical application can be harder than a school course for example. Read More

Weekly lessons with me are structured around achieving attainable short-term goals. Daily practice sessions are encouraged, but thoughtful, intermittent practice sessions far outweigh the necessity of sitting behind the kit every day. I strive to make the atmosphere of the lesson relaxed and fun; I'm patient and accommodating for different styles of learners. Although I'm fond of several famous publications such as Stick Control and The Art of Bop, I don't rely on text as the only way to deliver a musical message. Read More

I've been playing piano since age 7. I started playing with a promise to my parents, they would never have to tell me to practice in turn they brought a piano for. I still have and practice on. I have taken lessons up until College, where I graduated from Bennett College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy.
