If the students' main goal is to shred like Hendrix, then I would start with the basics of blues. I am a fellow Memphian and have been all of my life. I love everything about the music culture here in Memphis. You have gospel, jazz, reggae, blues and other great styles of music here! I graduated from Visible Music College with a bachelors degree music production. All though music engineering is my day job, being a bassist is my full on love. A Memphis native, Stephen L. studied with legendary Jazz pianist Donald Brown at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville before heading to New York City to finish his studies and further hone his skills in some of the most well-known jazz venues in the world. I teach the with Suzuki method. The Suzuki Method focuses on the Mother Tongue Method and was created by Dr. Sinichi Suzuki. He, and I, believe that every child is able to play music beautifully. The method emphasizes listening and parental involvement. I look to find the balance between challenge and enjoyment for each student. I like to start beginning students with the Rubank Elementary series of books. Along with the Rubank books, I like to also focus on music being covered in school, if applicable. For more advanced students, I focus on the mastery of scales, technique, intonation, and sound production. I like to use the Andersen etude series, but this will vary from student to student.
