Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. I follow the Suzuki method for beginner students, with some additional instruction to learn to read sheet music for those with previous music experience or older students who are ready to begin reading music. After the student has completed the first several books of the Suzuki method, I include selections from Solos for Young Violinists and other solo pieces as appropriate to reinforce certain skills. I started drumming when I was 13 years old with the desire to join a rock band. My first teacher was Jaime Jesperson, who opened my eyes to the world of advanced drumming styles beyond the world of rock music. My studies with him prepared me to study with Jay Lawrence, Utah's premier jazz drummer, and to qualify for a music scholarship at Brigham Young University, where I performed in several jazz groups and orchestral groups. I use the Suzuki Method throughout my teaching process. I think it is a great bases for teaching the techniques necessary to master the violin/viola. I also use various scale books (according to level) to teach note reading, sight reading, and basic music theory. I approach piano and violin instruction from a foundational, constructive perspective, combined with building rapport and reciprocal clarifying communications. Essentially this means that the student and I interact to build understanding by using the familiar to grasp the unfamiliar. An example is: When teaching hand position, I use the natural position the student already has when the hand is relaxed to build the hand playing position.
