As a piano teacher, my approach to education aligns with the Classical Model, emphasizing the development of critical thinking and listening skills alongside fundamental reading, writing, and thinking abilities. I believe in fostering a classroom environment that encourages participation and engagement, utilizing varied historical themes and musical materials to promote analysis of primary and secondary sources. To ensure all students can succeed, I provide a range of methods and assignments, including writing assignments, office hours, and exam review outlines. Read More

I find that it drives the student to learn the instrument for himself. And as the student wants, more and more, to prove that he can "beat the instrument," he begins to work at it in ways that I can't teach. Learning an instrument is more than showing up for one hour each week. Practice is everything. I feel that my methodology encourages students to take on the instrument head on and learn how to solve problems on their own so that they can practice and improve more quickly. Read More

I develop a lesson plan before every lesson and set realistic goals for each of my students. I spend the first couple of lessons assessing what kind of learner a new student is, that way I can cater more closely to their learning style. Read More

My students love the Faber Faber "Adventures in Music". These method books, in my opinion, have some of the most innovative and motivating pieces. This method gives the student a solid foundation in theory focusing on scales, and used in concert with other materials bring the student to a very proficient level. I also use supplementary materials such as Dozen A Day, Hanon, and Czerny. Martha Mier books for young children, especially her "Imagine" books are unique and inspiring. Read More

As a solo and collaborative artist, I have performed in venues including the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall (New York City, NY), Musco Center for the Arts (Orange, CA), and Edward M. Pickman Concert Hall (Cambridge, MA). My musical journey began at the age of 3, when I began taking piano lessons. I have been trained in the German and Russian schools of piano playing with musical lineages tracing back to Beethoven, Heinrich Neuhaus, and Nikolai Rubinstein. Read More

I come from Wuhan, China. When I was about five years old, my parents bought a piano, and I began my first piano lesson. I was not feeling comfortable or patient to practice, which was similar to many other kids. I once quit my piano playing for three years during junior school for not having enough time and energy to continue, however, I found the outburst of my enthusiasm towards music at the age of sixteen, and soon I picked my forgotten piano skills up. I started my teaching career in 1996, teaching at the same music studio where I took lessons when I was younger. I try to carry some of the teaching techniques that were shown to me when I was taking lessons into my own style of teaching. This includes making the lesson fun as well as educational for the student. Daily practice is strongly encouraged, as well as playing with other musicians, recitals, and writing their own songs.
