For beginners, I have a multitude of etudes, simple songs, and exercises to encourage sight-reading, finger comfortability, and basic cognitive understanding of music fundamentals such as scales. For guitar, I usually begin with fun simple songs such as "What do we do with the Drunken Sailor" and a simple blues. For woodwind instruments, I'll typically begin with songs such as Hot Cross Buns, Mary Had a Little Lamb, or some holiday songs during the holiday season. Read More

Every student has different goals in their music lessons. I aim to create a fun and safe learning environment that doesn't put unnecessary pressure on students. No matter what one teaches, the burden to learn ultimately lies on the student. I believe what truly makes a great teacher is the ability to invoke interest in the given topic, so that the student wants to learn more! I strive to help my students find the same joy I get from music and desire to practice/learn more. Read More

I am always continuing to expand my potential as a musician and as a human being. I feel that self-knowledge equates largely to the quality and meaning of music when expressed. Technical abilities are very important of course as they set the limitations of self-expression, though many seem to overlook the deeper purposes and benefits of music. I myself love my craft. From music I gain an intellectual rise through analysis, a creative outlet through improvising and composing, and a great understanding of how my body functions most effectively. Read More

My experience goes back to High School when I would give casual tutoring sessions to friends. In college I started teaching lessons in theory and composing/songwriting. I like to encourage students to get on a practicing schedule especially for younger students as it helps them get more interested in the instrument. I like to start with modern pop/rock styles to get the student interested in the instrument then mix in Jazz so we can talk about more complex theory and also mix in a little classical so we can talk about technique and form. If a student comes to me with more experience, I will select repertoire based on their interests, technical proficiency, and past repertoire. I very often write mini-etudes and technical exercises for each one of my students based on their personal musical path. Other repertoire I have assigned varies widely and includes Bach, Beethoven, Bartok, Scriabin, Shostakovich, Faur, Ravel, Barber, Glass, Cage, Oliveros, Ligeti, Saariaho, and Ellington, along with Great American Songbook repertoire, jazz standards, text pieces, pop songs, improvisation exercises, and animal song imitation.
