For drumset students, I usually start out with basic patterns and grooves that they can play to their favorite music. That way they really start to get into it. After we have established a bit of rapport, I will go into technique and see what their tolerance is for more intensive practice and more in depth techniques, all the while trying to keep things light and fun. While technique is important, we would like to make sure the student stays interested in the material and keep their attention with engaging material. Read More

I try to give each student an idea whats coming next, every few lessons or so, while practicing what their on currently. This idea is not for every student so it is a selective process I use with the brightest ones, or fast learners and good practicers. When I see a student really start to play well I gain confidence in my teaching style...but when needed I can dial it back a notch or two. With beginning and intermediate students, I work a lot with Faber and Faber's Piano Adventures and with the Alfred method. However, I am open to other methods if the student has a preference. With advanced students I strive towards a variety of repertoire. If they are classical players, I will make sure to eventually cover something Baroque, Classical (Mozart, Haydn, etc.), Romantic, and something modern, as well as all the gaps in between. Read More

Helping a student become passionate about music is the most rewarding thing I can get from teaching. I set realistic goals that help the student progress at a rate geared towards the student's own pace. Positive feedback helps instill a desire to continue working and practicing regularly. This also pushes the student to wish to learn and work on more challenging materials. By learning where each student draws his/her own inspiration, I tailor our lessons to their goals while opening up their possibilities to go even further than what the student thought possible. I began teaching private flute lessons right out of high school. I also started and directed a children's handbell choir for ages 8-12. After graduating from college, I have taught general music to grades Pre-K through high school for 25 years. I have directed children's choirs, teenage choirs, and handbell choirs. I have taught piano and flute lessons for 30 years. I have played my flute for churches, weddings and community bands. Read More

My experience with teaching began in high school, when I taught piano and choir at the pre-k level with a local community group. It was there that I fell in love with helping students learn. Since then, I have privately coached voice and piano, and helped students prepare for auditions or solos. Nothing is more amazing than watching someone achieve their goals and loving every step of the process! Read More

For beggining students in guitar or piano, I would have them start with a basic beggining book such as something by hal leonard. With guitar I will teach basic chords and go from there to working on songs. Scales and chords will be a big part of beggining work in these instruments. As for Saxophone, I will usually begin with scales and long tone work- the later being something extremely important. Read More

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
My advice for practicing effectively is to practice practice practice. I know that we might say that, that is a lot to do but once you start practicing and finding your mistake, and going over that one mistake you focused on. You can change it and make it better. I would also advice take advantage of online resources like music theory, utube, social media, etc. A lot of sites may contribute a lot of helpful tips on how to practice more effectively and what's the best way for you to start practicing effectively.
How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
You as a parent know your child really well, and may know when your child is ready to start for lessons. One of the things that you should notice is when your child knows the difference from left to right. Playing the piano with both hands is an amazing ability to obtain. So therefore you should if your child can recognize the difference. Another way that your child is ready is if your child can count up to 12. The note value on a music staff focuses on 1 count, 2 ,3 and so forth. Knowing that your child is ready to follow these steps is when you know that your child is ready to start lessons.
When will I start to see results?
You would start seeing results when you practice every day that one specific instrument you want to manage your time on. Have your own plan for how long you want to practice and stick with it. Start by looking up notes that you would want to play and then practice them. Another way is to start recording your playing through your device. Find your mistakes and improve upon them. It is never to late to grab an instrument and to start strumming. Finally, you should Mix up the different genres of playing. My mixing the way you play you your brain and muscles to function differently throughout practicing your different genes that you like listening to.
Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
I had a teacher that would inspire me into reading notes, and learning about music theory. My teach would encourage all of us. I would apply what I learned and teach every student in class about how to read the notes and what each note meant. The teacher needed extra support and I was that extra support that I provided for the class. She would also inspire me in never giving up by teaching, One of her inspirations was that she would always be on top of me when reading music notes for guitar and piano.
