Children should get their beginnings in technique books and eventually music that stimulates further growth and interest; and adults, like the kids, importance is placed on technique, but even moreso, good practice techniques! As adults we quickly lose patience and revert to bad habits when it comes to practice, and that slows growth, develops poor technique and narrows our abilities to only what we currently know. An approach I favor with students is to help them learn songs that they pick and then use those songs as a springboard to teach skills such as technique, reading music, theory, and improvising. I moved to Denver to be the head of piano at CU Denver, and have now moved into nonprofit work, along with performing and teaching from my home studio.
