Every student is different and has different dreams, needs and goals. So, my teaching style relies heavily on communicating with my students and their parents, if applicable. My first lesson is focused on setting goals for yourself and unearthing musical dreams and ideas. The following lessons are about hitting that goal as soon as possible. Once that goal is hit, I set another goal with you, and so on. I keep an eye on making sure you get the essentials (notes, finger placement, posture, good habits, etc.) and incorporate the things you are needing or missing into our goals. Read More

For beginning piano students, I use Alfred's All-in-one Piano Course books. These books combine repertoire and theory, thereby cutting down on the number of books a new student needs to purchase. I use a variety of materials for voice students. I may ask that my voice students purchase books of repertoire that contain songs useful for building on their strengths and working on their weaknesses. However, I also have an extensive music library in my home studio. Read More

I believe teaching music doesn’t just teach music—it teaches us life skills that are applicable to any field and any situation. My teaching philosophy is a mix of many ideas, and I believe it is more successful the more places I "steal" ideas from. As a music teacher at the 21st Century Public Academy, and the 2nd, being my job in the Army as a member of the 44th Army Band. Read More

Music for Little Mozart Series is great method to keep little kids interested and help to have fun while learning. The Music Workbook contains pages of coloring, tracing, matching, ear training and listening that have been carefully designed to reinforce the musical concepts introduced in the Music Lesson Books. Alfred Piano Method gives you tons of options for teaching the pianoincluding a basic course and a prep course that have supplemental books (recital books, technique books, and notespellers) that coordinate with them. I like to create lessons in which students learn to read traditional music notation, develop technique, and play familiar tunes. I use musictheory.net to help student practice reading note names. The faster a student can read musical notation, the faster the student can pick up new pieces. To develop technique, I want students to lean scales and arpeggios. Sometimes, we use a technique book to develop muscle memory, and other times technical exercises are created based on the tricky musical passages of solo or ensemble pieces. Read More

I try to keep the student as interested as possible, some have shorter attention spans then others and for them maybe i will do 30 minutes instead of 45 minutes. others who are really into it and do not want to leave i may teach them for an hour and that often turns into 2 or 3 hours of just jamming and having fun at no extra cost because without students a maestro is nothing but a musician playing music. i love to play along with students so they are more prepared when they go out and make music with others musicians and they can stay in time with a drummer more easily.
