My lesson plans are devised around each student's individual goals. Do you have a favorite musician that you want to sound like? Is there an ensemble that you are dying to play in? Through a combination of effective methods and specific structuring to your needs, I can help you achieve those goals! For double bass, I find F. Simandl's "New Method for the Double Bass" and "30 Etudes for the String Bass" to be extremely useful. Read More

I use games, contemporary and standard song repertoire, and traditional techniques to teach an instrument and my approach to music. As a NY State certified teacher I tend to use progressive music pedagogue, tiered lesson plans, and practical objectives to engage students in challenging and rewarding musical experiences. Read More

My method involves a two part approach - one is to teach proficiency with basics (reading and playing music). The other is to learn what music is, and how to keep yourself interested, progressing and that is by creating, modifying, improvising and composing. I believe everyone should dedicate at least part of their time with music to creativity. My methods also teach proficiency as the means to an end - creating great music. Read More

This varies depending on the student. I will typically design my lessons around the student's own individualized needs. I believe that there are many avenues that students can go down on the musical adventure. In the very beginning, there are basic, fundamental things that need to be learned, and repeated, but after that has been accomplished, it can go in many directions. I feel that if a student can make a personal connection with music that they love, and learn how to express that through their instrument of chouce, then their learning is both accelerated and enhanced. Watching a student progress and develop a passion for music as I did growing up is the most rewarding experience as a teacher. When it comes to how quickly a student will progress, there is no such thing as 'the norm.' Everyone learns at their own pace and I tailor my teaching to each and every student in this regard. At the end of each lesson, I give my students a goal for the next time I see them. Read More

I like to lay a foundation for what musical notes are and how they relate to the instrument. If we're on guitar I will draw a piano keyboard and give the student the guitar string names and make them figure out the rest of the notes. Then I teach them what chords are and, now that they know their way around a fretboard, they can build the chords themselves. While most students aren't total beginners and won't need all of this groundwork to be laid by me, I've found that almost everyone has gaps in knowledge, more often than not when it comes to actual note names and the music theory behind the instrument. I am a friendly teacher who loves to see students have fun. I often like to perform or play right alongside the student with either the same instrument or a complementary one (eg drums/guitar or drums/bass et al.). Finding out what inspires the student is key in developing a lasting connection to music. Whether they know what inspires them or not, I will work to educe it from them. Read More
