My teaching style can most accurately be described as patient and creative. Music should be fun. The student should enjoy practicing. It is my job to create a lesson plan that allows a student to progress steadily, without straining the limits of their abilities. I feel that it is important to focus on the individuals goals and interests so that each lesson is meaningful to that particular student..I focus on music, not exercises. Read More

I have always found great joy in student success. I have dedicated my career to the cultivation of my teaching style and methods. I have coached students for auditions into the Manhattan School of Music Pre-College division among other prestigious honors. I find that seeing the joy my students take in performing their hard work has come to define my approach. I center teaching on a goal oriented system that allows students to make progress toward small and large goals. Read More

My teaching is based on the thought that everone can be comfortable with making music. Since comfort comes best when things are fun, I like to focus on music that the student likes. This usually involves improvising as soon as a student knows a few notes, which creates a chance for self-expression and leads to confidence in playing with others. I also place emphasis on phrasing, My experience is that many students get wrapped up in the mechanical process of playing at the expense of musicality. Read More

I believe that it's important to have heard a wide breadth of the kind of music that you might be interested in learning. As a jazz guitarist, and as a student of classical composition, it has been drilled into my head by scores of teachers (no pun intended!) that careful listening is the first (and most important) step in the process of learning. I would go home from guitar lessons in high school with handfuls of CDs, and feel that it is important to pass on a knowledge of the history of a given kind of music, whether it's afro-cuban jazz, R&B, classical, western swing, or prog rock! Since 2007, I've documented various events, such as an international summer course for music and dance educators in Czech Republic, a children's English language and Art camp in Ibiza Spain, and a national archery competition in Austria. Recently in New York, I assisted as GE swing for a Studio 4 horror production and volunteered as a videographer for DOC NYC, America's largest documentary film festival. Read More

Hi! My name is Darrin, I've been playing guitar, mainly as a hobby, for over 40 years. I have been in bands for most of that time and have played 100s of gigs. My experience spans a diverse musical mix. Acoustic/electric. Covers/originals. Oldies, rock, pop, punk, heavy metal, blues, classical and a little country. I have taught off and on for about 5 years and love to see my students experience the joy of learning and playing music. Read More

For a beginning student on guitar, I have them learning notes from a Hal Leonard, Mel Bay, or Alfred starter book. All these books are great, but I believe it depends on the individual student and how they learn. I also teach tab to beginners. I feel it is important to read tabs these days as well as notes. I also work with music theory. It is also important to know what you are doing, not just putting your fingers on the strings. Read More
