I have developed a method for guitar students of all ages to quickly learn chords and scales so that they can not only learn the chord progression to songs, they can also find the correct scale to "solo" and improvise over them. Once the chord structure and scale are learned I accompany the student, playing along with them so that they can practice playing with another musician and soloing. The combination of technique, sheet music, sight reading and music tracks that the student want to learn is a great way for the students to learn at their own pace. Practicing every day or every other day and having a track when playing each week can really develop your playing. Practicing for 10-50 minutes is ideal, rather than, only practicing for 3 hours one day a week. For young beginner students, I use either Faber and Faber's Piano Adventures or Bastien Piano Basics. I also supplement these methods with level-appropriate materials from my private library. For adult students, lessons are tailored to meet the student's interests and purpose. Lesson times are learning times, but I try to make the process fun, with time for creativity and music games. When I meet new students, I start by figuring out where they are on their journey, and I meet them there. I approach each lesson uniquely, because we are all different and learn in different ways. I teach with a combination of Lesson and Theory books, usually Alfred's Basic, and we will focus on healthy playing technique. I understand that Lesson and Theory books are not always the most interesting, and I supplement materials by teaching chords so students can learn pop songs of their choosing as well. Read More
