My goal as an instructor is to help my student's achieve their goals, help them be the best they can be, and encourage my students to have fun while doing so! I have a Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Studies from Western Michigan University and a Master of Music degree in Jazz Performance from New England Conservatory. I was a finalist in the 2nd Annual Ella Fitzgerald Jazz Vocal Competition and Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival Voice Competition in 2017. Read More

I try to provide a good balance between working on theory, technique, and repertoire, and working on aspects that might be more fun like a students favorite song. This allows the student to make progress while also keeping motivated, which is really important for long term goals. For children, the balance has to lean more towards the more entertaining aspect, because of the reduced attention span. I actively work towards getting the younger students to increase their tolerance towards difficult challenges so that they can make more overall progress. Read More

My teaching style is based on a balance between fun and progression. I have a loose, fun-loving personality that can also be balanced with the seriousness to get things done. I ensure that the student knows that I care, both about their goals, and them as an individual. I use a lot of humor and wit in my lessons to help make sure my students are relaxed. I also provide critical feedback that both allows students to improve while at the same time highlight a student's strengths. Read More

For beginning students, I start with Michael Aaron and Michael Aaron Music Theory books. The beginner students really enjoy these theory books! I also incorporate Fabers Music Adventures into the lessons. As the student progresses, I begin to introduce pieces appropriate for their levels and tastes. Each student learns and progresses individually and I take that into account when suggesting repertoire for them. One student may want a classical piece while another student may want a song by Bruno Mars. Read More

You can also improvise on songs that you hear on the radio without knowing the key of the song just by getting a feel of how the song sounds and you will find the notes on your instrument and start jamming to the songs you hear on the radio. Having a good memory will also help you with that. If you don't know the chord progression for the 1st verse of a song, usually, the 2nd verse has the same progression. Read More

I try to be as flexible as possible, many things would depend on the student's age and background. I pay a lot of attention to movement when playing the instrument, I try to do this from the lesson one with an absolute beginner. For most beginning students who are children , I typically start with Alfred Alfred's Basic Piano Prep Course Lesson Book A and voice I typically start with Adventures in singing.
