For beginning students who are children, I typically start with the Alfreds Basic Piano Library method and theory books. Ideally, a new song is assigned every week and the student will practice daily. During lessons we will review the piece that the student has practiced, I will provide feedback, and we will move forward to a new skill. I have been teaching private lessons for about 15 years, as well as camps and workshops. I have served as a clinician and instructor at Drumline camps and with Orchestra. I created the Percussive Arts Institute of Ruston to bring music education to an underserved community and taught around 100 students in an after-school program. Always start where the student is, and take them from there. Always encourage and inspire students to be better than yesterday. Progress, no matter the amount, is progress. Take your own pace. If you have a specific deadline, for example a college audition, you will have to commit to practicing more than usual and we will create a plan of action. Also, I do write letters of recommendation. I typically use the Alfred method, although I still like John Thompson, and I also like the Faber method. For adults, I like to use the Alfred books that are specifically for them.
