I welcome students of all ages from five years and up. My teaching experience began over 20 years ago when I taught voice lessons to several of the choir students at Choctaw High School. I am passionate about music and about helping find the unique approach for each student. Music Theory is the language of music and I focus a portion of each lesson learning that language. I think it is important to incorporate both classical repertoire and music that is of specific interest to the student. Read More

For children, I focus on the comprehension of pitch and note reading. If the child has a song that he or she wants to sing, then we will pursue it if it is vocally fitting. If not, I have a variety we can choose from. We also will pursue the fundamentals of music theory in our lessons as well. Music is not made by the instrument be it voice, piano, trumpet or any other. Remember music is made by and comes through The Musician! I teach about how to be a musician. When students feel like musicians it fosters a greater sense of ownership and accomplishment bringing the joy needed to advance exponentially. My teaching experience began at the University of Tulsa. I taught voice to a few students who were non music majors for about a year. After graduating from the University of Tulsa, I began teaching at Brook Fine Arts Academy in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I taught over 30 students a week in both voice and piano (ages 3 to 20) for over a year. I base my teaching methods on the student I am teaching. For students that are children at a beginner level, I typically begin with the essential elements of creating vocal foundation which I draw from many sources. Once we have set a good foundation, we tend to begin working on repertoire that is appropriate for the level at which they are singing, using those songs as learning opportunities. For adults, I begin by asking about the goals of the individual student and I then formulate a strategy to help the student reach their specific singing goals. Read More

For younger students, I always want to make sure our lessons stay fun, while encouraging growth at the same time, so I usually let them pick a song they like, and then I assign another to assist with their musical development. For older students and adults, we really dive into technique and vocal health, with a strong emphasis on technicalities like breath support and placement, and then use that foundation to branch out into multiple genres.
