I began teaching in my Junior year of my undergraduate degree at Westminster for a community outreach program. One of my longest standing students is now attending that college for voice performance as well. I taught mostly younger girls who wanted to sing in choir or the school musical. Some were very serious and others just wanted to have a fun hobby. But they all loved to sing and I had the opportunity to excite them even more, and help them follow the path of music. Read More

My mom was a Carnatic music teacher. I had once subbed for her when she was late coming from work. It was fun teaching her students. My mom also worked with children with special needs. I have watched her work and I got inspired by her. I wanted to go into Music Therapy after seeing her work, as well as the experiencing of assisting her. I have had a troubled childhood, and music helped me. Read More

Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I like to go slow at first and see how things go lesson by lesson. I never like to challenge my students too much in the beginning because it can be rather frustrating to continue learning music. I also believe theory is very important and will ALWAYS include this in my teaching. Read More

I have been teaching private lessons for about 2 years, both for a company and privately. These lessons include beginner piano, voice, and violin. In my music therapy internship I have also had the experience of teaching adaptive piano, guitar, and ukulele lessons. Finally, while I am not yet board certified and cannot offer music therapy until next school year, I have over 1,000 hours of music therapy clinical experience in which I use musical activities to help clients achieve non-musical goals in the areas of cognition, emotion, physical abilities, communication, social skills and academics. Instruments: Voice

The first half of a typical voice lesson is spent on vocal warm-ups and vocalises. These consist of scales, arpeggios, vowel unification, breath work, etc. and have been accumulated from many teachers over a variety of traditions. Vocalises are the most important part of a solid vocal technique. The second half of lessons is spent working on repertoire either brought in by the student or assigned by myself. Concepts from vocal warm ups will be applied to repertoire, and students are expected to practice on a regular basis outside of lessons. Read More

I start by finding the things students like most about their instruments and given style to learn. We then try to pick apart and play based off of that. Certain techniques facilitate practical application. For instance, If a student is getting ready for an audition, there are techniques where the student can learn how to cope with the anxiety. My method is very personalized to the student. For piano, I love using the Faber Piano Adventure series for both little ones through adult. They do an excellent job formatting their age-appropriate materials to students and get them playing and learning to read music early on in the learning. For voice, I devise my own warm up exercises that tailor to the needs of the student. Breath, diction, resonance, body posture, and tension are among some of the technical priorities I have when teaching voice. Read More
