For beginner and intermediate students: I begin with the end; or rather, an end product. I ask questions like: What sort of music inspires you? What music do you love? What music could you not live without? What music do you aspire to make? Which musicians do you look up to? Depending on the answers, we can figure out a song / artist / style to choose as a goal together. Then I personally learn the chord structure and melody. (In the rare case that they are completely directionless, I'll choose a popular song that they can easily listen to on their own.) From there, I start teaching the fundamental techniques of the instrument, and continually refer back to our song, for why the technique is important. Read More

I then guide the student through various exercises that are designed to improve and strengthen specific areas of the voice, specific registers, problem areas, and so on. I've been a trombonist for 33 years. I graduated from Judson High School in Converse, TX in 1991, where I was Band President. We retained 1's in our marching and concert performances, as well as with the Jazz Ensemble. We won First Place in a National Marching and Concert competition in Colorado Springs, CO my senior year, as well as performing half time shows at two state football championship games. I've performed professionally since then, acquired my music degree and have made it all the way to performing with stars for a sold out audience at The Hollywood Bowl. Read More
