For beginners I typically start with the Bastien or Faber Method and as their level increases I always assign pieces outside of the piano method which are generally performed at their first recital. Adults are also welcome to participate and I have them work on at least 2 contrasting pieces based on skills they may need to work on as well as something they love and enjoy learning. I do give basics importance (scales, arpeggios, etc) as I believe this greatly improves a student's understanding and helps them reach a much higher level in the repertoire they are working on. I try to get to know students personally and musically. My goal in teaching is to help students to pursue their goals whether as professional musicians or music lovers which are equally important to me. I dont ever set any fixed expectations and rules in teaching as they are all adjustable to me working with individuals who are all at different levels and share different values. I have been teaching piano since 2005 and been very active in Greater Boston area since 2014. I've had students aged from 4 to mid-50. I also worked as a tutor at Berklee College of Music during my study. Dicipline may be the most important thing to emphasize in the very beginning stage of learning. But I see learning piano more as a creative process, encouraging students to have a personal connection with the instrument by introducing songs they know, helping them to write simple songs and so on. For beginners, especially younger players, I believe it is best to start with simple pieces to build security. For this I usually try to pick fairly well known melodies that the student likely has in their head already, such as 'Ode to Joy' or 'Jingle-Bells'. By starting with tunes the student already knows, I believe that the learning process becomes much more intuitive. For teens/adults I encourage the student to find out what the students interests/goals are and adjust my lesson accordingly. Read More

For beginning students who are children, I typically start with a modified Suzuki method, starting with rote learning and eventually progressing to notated music. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance.
