It's important to me that students enjoy what they are singing--if they don't, they won't be motivated, are less likely to practice, and they won't progress as quickly. Still, I believe students should sing a variety of literature (and may even find something they didn't know they enjoyed), and regularly start beginning students with some simple Italian art songs. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. As a teacher and mentor, my priority is to help the student set and work towards their own goals. My teaching expertise is classical and musical theater, and I believe that students can be very successful branching out to different styles from this technical foundation. Every week I give a set of warm-ups and exercises to focus on and expect students to practice so we can hone them when we’re together, but I’ll never ask a student to do something they’re not comfortable or familiar with - if ever there’s a question I’m there to answer or demonstrate.
